ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the entire world in an unprecedented way since 2019. However, novel and innovative applications of various omics, computational, and smart technologies have helped manage the pandemic of the 21st century in a very effective manner. Omics approaches and technologies in COVID-19 presents up-to-date knowledge on omics, genetic engineering, mathematical and computational approaches, and advanced technologies in the diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, and management of COVID-19. This book contains 26 chapters written by academic and industry experts from more than 15 countries. Split into three sections (Omics;Artificial Intelligence and Bioinformatics;and Smart and Emerging Technologies), it brings an overview of novel technologies under omics such as, genomic, metagenomic, pangenomic, metabolomics and proteomics in COVID-19. In addition, it discusses hostpathogen interactions and interactomics, management options, application of genetic engineering, mathematical modeling and simulations, systems biology, and bioinformatics approaches in COVID-19 drug discovery and vaccine development. This is a valuable resource for students, biotechnologists, bioinformaticians, virologists, clinicians, and pharmaceutical, biomedical, and healthcare industry people who want to understand the promising omics and other technologies used in combating COVID-19 from various aspects. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. ABSTRACT

Metabolomics is a comprehensive approach for identifying, quantifying, and characterizing entire metabolites in a biological system using a high-throughput technique. Metabolomics has great potential in discovering biochemical pathways and pathway interactions, disease diagnosis, and biomarker discovery. Viral infections induce changes in the host cell metabolism resulting in cellular reprogramming. In COVID-19, the dysregulation of host metabolites has been implemented in various aspects including diagnosis and management. This chapter summarizes various applications of metabolites and metabolomics approaches in COVID-19. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 has created a global disaster by infecting millions of people and causing thousands of deaths across hundreds of countries. Currently, the infection is in its exponential phase in several countries and there is no sign of immediate relief from this deadly virus. At the same time, some “conspiracy theories” have arisen on the origin of this virus due to the lack of a “definite origin”. To understand if this controversy is also reflected in scientific publications, here, we reviewed the key articles published at initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic (January 01, 2020 to April 30, 2020) related to the zoonotic origin of SARS-CoV-2 and the articles opposing the “conspiracy theories”. We also provide an overview on the current knowledge on SARS-CoV-2 Spike as well as the Coronavirus research domain. Furthermore, a few important points related to the “conspiracy theories” such as “laboratory engineering” or “bioweapon” aspects of SARS-CoV-2 are also reviewed. In this article, we have only considered the peer-reviewed publications that are indexed in PubMed and other official publications, and we have directly quoted the authors’ statements from their respective articles to avoid any controversy.
